Creative Non-fiction
Wednesday 26 May 2010 - Wednesday 30 June 2010
These classes deal with key themes and genres of the discipline of creative non-fiction, including memoir and life-writing, travel and landscape writing, and cross-over areas that may include music, sport and true-crime writing. The classes discuss technical and structural issues such as research for creative non-fiction writing, seminal essays of the genre, and the history and growth of creative non-fiction. Students discuss the published work of established writers, including Joan Didion, Don Watson, John Hersey and Chloe Hooper. Students are also provided with exercises to stimulate the writing process, and are encouraged to present their own writing in the workshop.
Tony Birch is a writer who has published widely in the areas of short fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. He has also worked as a writer and curator in collaboration with photographers, filmmakers and artists. He is a lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne.
