Histories, Fictions

Saturday 2 October 2010 - Sunday 3 October 2010

Presented by: Michael Meehan
Rating: Introductory and Intermediate
Type: Workshop
Additional dates: Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 October, 10am – 4pm

This workshop explores “ways of doing things with history”, in fiction. Participants are expected to be familiar with a number of prescribed historical fictions, together with some short theoretical and critical readings. The main focus is on the creative exploration of strategies for drawing on history, adapting and varying historical material, and experimenting with narrative methods and structures that allow best use of and access to history in fiction.

Michael Meehan is Professor in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University. He has published three novels: The Salt of Broken Tears, which won the 2000 NSW Premier’s Prize for Fiction and is set in the Victorian Mallee in the late 1920s; Stormy Weather, which is set in the same region, in 1954; and Deception, which draws on the events of the 1871 Paris Commune and the subsequent deportation of political prisoners to new Caledonia.. His next novel. Below the Styx, to be published in February 2010, looks into the life of the 19th century author Marcus Clarke.
