On the Road
Saturday 5 June 2010 - Saturday 6 June 2009
Would you like to break into travel writing? Can you imagine yourself hitting the road with a laptop and an idea for a story? In this workshop Rowan McKinnon will give some insights into what it’s like authoring for a big travel guidebook company in an industry that’s rapidly changing. In a web-enabled world of high-tech and social media, how is the travel writer’s role evolving and what skills do you need to break into the field? Can you make a living as a full-time travel writer? We’ll look at the industry today and what challenges are on the horizon. We’ll also look honing your ideas for travel articles and how to get them published, building a folio and pitching pieces to publishers. Rowan has been writing travel guides for Lonely Planet for nearly 15 years, and has written for magazines including National Geographic Traveler, Gourmet Traveller and Mercedes Australia, as well as newspapers and websites like Viator and Mr & Mrs Smith.
More about the author… Rowan McKinnon is a travel writer for Lonely Planet who had his first guidebook published in 1997. He’s worked on various guides to Australia and the Caribbean, but mostly he specialises in the island states of the South Pacific. Rowan’s spent days travelling up the Papua New Guinea’s mighty Sepik River in a 20-metre-long dugout canoe, seen dozens of human skulls in head-hunting shrines in the Solomon Islands, snorkelled with sharks and lived with villagers all in the name of guidebook research. He’s also spent inordinate amounts of time on more mundane task like pouring over airplane schedules and fares, visa conditions, customs regulations and currency exchange rates. And he’s looked at lots and lots of hotel rooms.
