Plain English
Thursday 23 September 2010, 6:30PM - 8:00PM
Explore the place of plain English in the broader field of communication and argue its case as a lean, well-aimed tool that gets the message across to the broadest possible audience without ambiguity or confusion. What feeds the unclear, dense English that abounds in the media, government, business and retail – intellectual vanity, fear of looking dumb, pesky lawyers (of course) and a public that has been bludgeoned into submission by its heavy, dull, self-important pedantry. Andrew will amuse with real-life examples from people who turn nouns into verbs. (eg I have “benchmarked” your attainment) to buzzword salads that slink across his desk.
