These writers, from distinctly different backgrounds, both have a story to tell about their rise to success in the literary arena.
Born in Sydney, Steven Conte moved to Melbourne in 1999 and did a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne, developing the manuscript that became The Zookeeper’s War. The novel was published in 2007, and in 2008 it was awarded the inaugural Australian Prime Minister’s Literary Award for fiction. Steven is currently writer-in-residence at the University of Melbourne’s Trinity College.
Brendan Gullifer has a 30-year history in the media, both in Australia and overseas, working as a journalist, investigative reporter and sub editor. In 2001-2002 he worked as a real estate agent in the Melbourne suburbs of Hawthorn and Kew, which led to his first novel. More recently, he has written for The Age, newMatilda.com and the Sydney Sun-Herald. He has reported for Radio National’s The Book Show and has been a regular guest and co-host for Melbourne Radio.
