Year of Creative Non-fiction
Sunday 28 March 2010 - Sunday 28 November 2010
Creative non-fiction is a broad term that includes a range of writing genres (life writing, food writing, true crime, personal essay and more), all of which have two things in common: they deal with real life and they are written in creative, vivid prose. In a sense, creative non-fiction is the documentary film of the literary world. This course provides participants with the opportunity to explore the different genres of creative non-fiction. Participants will learn the principles of creative non-fiction writing, such as research, ethics, finding frameworks to tell factual stories, the use of fictional devices and more. The emphasis will be on the integration of personal experiences and worldviews within the writing, to make it more unique and engaging, and on cross-genre works. Participants will be encouraged to develop their own projects throughout the year in a supportive environment.
Lee Kofman is an Israeli-Australian author of three books. Her short publications in Australia, UK, Scotland and US include creative non-fiction, short fiction and poetry in literary journals and anthologies, such as Best Australian Stories 2007, Griffith Review, Westerley, Antipodes, and more. She is a recipient of the Australian Council grant, Varuna Flagship Fellowship, various writing residencies, Varuna Award Masterclass and ASA mentorship and holds MA in Creative Writing (University of Melbourne). For the last six years, Lee has also been teaching creative writing across various Australian settings.
